Scottish Man Who Fought for Russia Charged Under UK Terror Laws After Returning Home - "It Was a Stupid Decision"

Jay Fraser, 25, a Scottish national from Dunblane, Stirlingshire, has been charged under the Terrorism Act 2006 in connection with his participation in Russia's war against Ukraine. Fraser appeared at Glasgow Sheriff Court via videolink from HMP Barlinnie, where he is remanded in custody after making no plea. The case was reported by The Scottish Sun on June 6, 2026.

Fraser, who worked as an apprentice brewer at Tennent's brewery in Glasgow, joined the Russian Orthodox Church while still in Scotland before eventually traveling to Russia. He documented his time there in a series of online videos and was described by associates in Russia as a "celebrity." He is understood to have been granted Russian citizenship.

In a blog post published in March last year, Fraser appeared to acknowledge the gravity of his decision: "I closed a hundred doors to open only one. I gave up a lot to come here and, in hindsight, it was a stupid decision."

Police Scotland's specialist detectives have confirmed a formal investigation into his conduct. A UK Government spokesman stated: "While we do not routinely comment on individual cases, anyone travelling from Britain to conflict zones to engage in unlawful activity can expect to face the full force of the law on their return." The Fraser family declined to comment.

That warning applies to all those who were lucky enough to return alive. Returning home after serving in Russia's Armed Forces does not mean safety from prosecution — as Fraser's case makes clear.
