Peru Launches Human Trafficking Probe After Russian Recruiters Send Citizens to War in Ukraine

Peru's prosecutors have opened a human trafficking investigation after Russian recruiters were accused of dispatching the country's citizens to fight in the Russia Ukraine war.

In distant Peru, relatives of missing citizens - promised high-paying jobs in Russia by recruiters - have taken to the streets in protest. Specialized prosecutors for human trafficking in Lima and North Lima have initiated preliminary proceedings for human trafficking and aggravated human trafficking offenses. Peru's Attorney General's Office is urging the public to remain vigilant regarding jobs in russia without verified guarantees to prevent further cases of recruitment for exploitation.

The "I Want to Live" project publsihed data on at least 12 Peruvians who signed contracts with the russian armed forces recruitment system. Every second one has either died or gone missing. Some who joined the Russian army didn't survive even a month:
